Sagres Bird Festival. In October thousands of birds fly over the Algarve en route to wintering grounds in Africa. The Sagres Birdwatching Festival is a superb event on the first weekend of October which incorporates a fabulous programme of birdwatching and nature activities and is one of the most important events in the worlds birdwatching calendar.

The Sagres Birdwatching festival organised with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds SPEA is a celebration of nature as well as wildlife and the programme will include around 200 nature-related activities such as nature excursions boat trips environmental education workshops and courses guided tours bird ringing and more. There will be great opportunities for photography and also for picking out a rarer species amongst the flocks of birds.
From October 10 to 13 the birds become the stars in the most south-westerly region of Europe with fans flocking to Sagres to take part in activities workshops and meet with like-minded.
Every year on the first weekend of October Sagres hosts its now famous Birdwatching Festival which is the largest birdwatching event that takes place in Portugal. Not only is the landscape spectacular but its biological heritage is unique in Europe. Thanks to a collaboration between the Vila do Bispo Municipality the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds SPEA BirdLife in Portugal and the NGO Almargem the 5 th Sagres Birdwatching Festival will be held from 2 nd - 5 th of October 2014 in this magnificent part of the southern Portuguese region of Algarve which is home to unique bird species and the perfect place to witness a natural phenomenon that is not easily seen elsewhere in the country.
