Bird Banding Station. The fundamental goal of bird banding has always been to record the age sex wing length fat deposits and body mass of captured species as a way of monitoring year to year how avian populations are faring in the wild. Banding stations also serve as outdoor classrooms to enhance the publics appreciation of birds and their habitats.
Each spring and fall AIMS staff who are all volunteers and students band birds from dawn to dusk seven days a week weather permitting. The vast majority are actually quite calm during their short visit at the banding station. In the last 30-plus years the Bird Conservancy has banded more than 100000 birds.
The bird captured on Thursday was a recapture and was banded during fall migration banding on 28 November 2020.
The banding station runs from the beginning of August when Fall migration starts until the end of May when all migrants have left the state and the local birds continue to raise their broods. The ten most commonly banded species are Bewicks wren 221 song sparrow 213 chestnut-backed chickadee 201 Wilsons warbler 168 ruby-crowned kinglet 135 bushtit 129 wrentit 110 spotted towhee 103 common yellowthroat 97 and golden-crowned sparrow 68.
