Amherst Island Birding. While owls are a big draw for birders and photographers the island boasts over 350 species of birds including bald eaglesharriers swansducks rough-legged hawk and the red-tailed hawk. In spring and autumn Amherst Island can be a great place to see migrating waterfowl shorebirds and passerines. Did a quick check along the South Shore road and observed 3 Snowy owl and there was along the channel seen from the ferry. For the first time on Amherst I carefully checked every feeder and also pished frequently in suitable sparrow habitat.
The highlight of the day came later in the day.
